Volunteer Roles: New York City Brain Tumor Walk

Volunteers are essential to the Brain Tumor Walk! Thank you for your dedication to the brain tumor cause. Training is provided when you arrive.

We will do our best to match you with your preferred volunteer role; however, due to demand this is not always possible. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us at lorlovsky@braintumor.org

Set-Up Crew (Day Before Event) 2:30 PM – 6:00 PM
Help with unloading and placing boxes and supplies in the tents in preparation for event. Organize tables in their tents and place tablecloths on the tables. Must be able to lift up to 20 lbs.

Photography 8:00 AM – 12 noon
Do you enjoy taking photos? We need help getting the perfect shots of our walk teams, survivors, participants and volunteers. Photographers will be provided with a “shot” list and asked to upload their photos to an NBTS platform within 24 hours our event. Must have your own camera.

Registration and Check-In 8:00 AM – 11:30 AM
Set up the Registration and Check-In tent. Check-in pre-registered participants and register new Walk-ups. You may also be responsible for collecting donations. A mandatory registration training will take place in the morning before registration begins.

Registration Line Monitors 7:30 AM – 10:30 AM
Assist and support registration tent with crowd direction and control in the lines. Mandatory registration training will take place when you arrive. At the end of the event, you will organize and pack supplies in the tent and assist with clean up.

Kids Tent 7:30 AM – Noon
Assist at kids tent by offering coloring/painting sheets. Keeping track of art supplies, etc. At the end of the event, you will organize and pack supplies in the tent and assist with clean up.

Greeters/Parking 7:30 AM – 11:00 AM
Welcome attendees, answer questions, and direct people to the Registration tent. Direct all vehicles to the drop-off area in order to unload passengers. A briefing about parking options and shuttle stop information will take place as applicable. Must be able to be on your feet for long periods of time.

Incentive/Merchandise Tent 7:30 AM – 1:00 PM
Give out incentive prizes to those participants that have earned such prizes. Keep an accurate list of who has been given what items and keep a list if we owe anyone an item. Sell small amounts of NBTS merchandise. Keep track of what was sold and collect payment.

Honor and Celebrate Tent 8:30 AM – Noon
Assist participants in writing messages and hanging photos of loved ones on the Hope and Memory banners.

Team Signs @ the Kids Tent 8:30 AM – 11:00 AM
Set up the designated team sign creation area, complete with craft supplies. Assist walkers as necessary.

Route Marshals 8:30 AM – 11:30 AM
Direct walk participants from the start/finish line safely around the course and back. Volunteers will assist with road crossings, directions, crowd control and information.

Volunteer Check-in 6:30 AM – 11:30 AM
Assist the volunteer committee member with checking in all volunteers for the event. Provide site maps, directions and other key items for the volunteers. Ensure that all volunteers are registered. Keep an accurate list of attendance and include information on volunteers that join us on the day of the event. Organize and pack remaining supplies after the event.

Survivor Thriver Celebration Tent 7:30 AM – Noon
Welcome our honored guests and make them feel special! Assist in the set-up of the Survivor T-shirt tent and distribute special event Survivor T-shirts to participants. At the end of the event, you will take inventory on sheet provided, pack supplies and assist with clean up.

Water Stop  8:30 AM – Noon
Set-up and breakdown water stop for event day. Distribute water to participants. At least one person is required to have a car to drive cases of water to the stop and set up area.

Set-Up Crew (Day of Event) 6:30 AM – 8:30 AM
Help with unloading and placing boxes and supplies in the tents in preparation for event. Organize tables and hang signage. Must be able to lift up to 20 lbs. Placing signage out on the walk route.

Cheerleaders 10:00 AM – 10:45 AM
Cheer on the participants as they start the walk and welcome them back when they return. Noisemakers are provided.

Runners at the Registration Tent 7:30 AM – 11:30 AM
Assist in the registration tent. Separate t-shirts by size and hand them to participants as they check in. Must be able to stand for long periods of time.

Food Area 8:30 AM – 1:00 PM
Assist in setting up the food area on-site. Monitor and help distribute food to participants. Bag and tie waste in provided garbage bags. Keep rubbish and recyclables separate. Organize and pack remaining supplies after the event. Must be able to be on your feet for long periods of time.

Breakdown/Clean-up  Noon – 2:00 PM
Organize and pack supplies and assist with clean up. Must be able to lift up to 20 lbs.

Banking 10:00 AM – Noon
Count event donations in an off-site location with National Brain Tumor Society staff. Must be reliable and efficient. Anyone with banking experience is preferred.
