Volunteer Roles: Long Island Brain Tumor Walk

Volunteers are essential to the success of the Brain Tumor Walk! Thank you for your dedication to the brain tumor cause. Complete volunteer role descriptions will be available after you confirm your volunteer shift.

We will do our best to match you with your preferred volunteer role; however, due to demand this is not always possible. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us at lorlovsky@braintumor.org.

Set-Up Crew (Day Before Event) 11:00 AM – 4:00 PM
Help with unloading and placing boxes and supplies in the tents in preparation for event. Hang all event signage. Organize tables in their tents and place tablecloths on the tables. Must be able to lift up to 20 lbs.

Set-Up Crew (Day of Event) 6:30 AM – 8:00 AM
Help with unloading and placing boxes and supplies in the tents in preparation for event. Organize tables and hang signage. Must be able to lift up to 20 lbs.

Volunteer Check-in 6:30 AM – 1:00 PM
Assist with checking in all volunteers for the event. Provide site maps, directions and other key items for the volunteers. Ensure that all volunteers are registered. Keep an accurate list of attendance and include information on volunteers that join us on the day of the event. Organize, tally and pack remaining supplies after the event.

Registration and Check-In 6:30 AM – Noon
Set up the Registration and Check-In tent. Check-in pre-registered participants and register new walk-ins. You may also be responsible for collecting donations. A mandatory registration training will take place via conference call on Wednesday evening, September 11th at 7 pm. Adult volunteers preferred.

T-Shirt Runners @ the Registration Tent 7:00 AM – Noon
Assist in the registration tent. Separate t-shirts by size and hand them to participants as they check in. Must be able to stand for long periods of time.

Registration Line Monitors 7:00 AM – Noon
Assist and support registration tent with crowd direction and control in the lines. A mandatory registration training will take place when you arrive. At the end of the event, you will organize and pack supplies in the tent and assist with clean up.

Greeters/Parking 7:00 AM – Noon
Welcome attendees, answer questions, and direct people to the Registr ation tent. Direct all vehicles to the drop-off area in order to unload passengers. Must be able to be on your feet for long periods of time.

Honor and Celebrate Tent 7:00 AM – Noon
Assist participants in writing messages and hanging photos of loved ones on the Hope and Memory banners.

Route Marshals 8:00 AM – 11:00 AM
Direct walk participants from the start/finish line safely around the course and back. Volunteers will assist with road crossings, directions, crowd control and information.

Survivor Thriver Celebration Tent 7:00 AM – Noon
Assist in the set up of the Survivor T-shirt tent and distribute special event Survivor T-shirts and goodies to our guests of honor. At the end of the event, you will take inventory on sheet provided, pack supplies and assist with clean up.

Water Stop #1 8:00 AM – 10:00 AM
Set-up and breakdown water stop for event day. Distribute water to participants. It is helpful if volunteers have a car to drive supplies to the water station.

Incentive Tent 7:00 AM – Noon
Give out National Brain Tumor Society memorabilia item for pre-determined donation amount. Set-up tables, chairs and display items in tents. Give out incentive prizes to those participants that have earned prizes. Keep an accurate list of who has been given what items and keep a list if we owe anyone an item.

Cheerleaders 8:30 AM – 10:00 AM
Cheer on the participants as they start the walk and welcome them back when they return. Noisemakers are provided.

Refreshments Area 7:00 AM – Noon
Assist in setting up the food area on-site. Monitor and help distribute food to participants. Bag and tie waste in provided garbage bags. Keep rubbish and recyclables separate. Organize and pack remaining supplies after the event. Must be able to be on your feet for long periods of time.

Kids Tent 7:00 AM – Noon
Assist at kids tent by offering coloring/painting sheets. Keeping track of art supplies, etc. At the end of the event, you will organize and pack supplies in the tent and assist with clean up.

Team Signs 7:00 AM – 9:30 AM
Set up the designated team sign creation area, complete with craft supplies. Assist participants as necessary.

Breakdown/Clean-up 11:00 AM – 2:00 PM
Organize and pack supplies and assist with clean up. Must be able to lift up to 20 lbs.

Banking 9:00 AM – 11:00 AM
Count event donations in an off-site location with NBTS staff. Must be reliable and efficient.
